Η ιστορία του ποπ-κορν
Δημοφιλές σνακ από καβουρντισμένους κόκκους αραβοσίτου. Προτού το ανακαλύψουν οι κινηματογραφόφιλοι ήταν ήδη γνωστή και αγαπητή συνήθεια στους κατοίκους των σπηλαίων. Το παλαιότερο εύρημα, ηλικίας 5.000 ετών, εντοπίστηκε στο Νέο Μεξικό και οι επιστήμονες το θεωρούν καθαρά αμερικανικό προϊόν.
Οι ιθαγενείς το απολάμβαναν τοποθετώντας έναν – έναν τους σπόρους αραβοσίτου πάνω από τη φλόγα με τη βοήθεια ενός κλαδιού. Με το ποπ-κορν έφτιαχναν μπύρα και σούπες, ενώ το χρησιμοποιούσαν και για την κατασκευή κοσμημάτων. Κάπως έτσι έμαθε την ύπαρξη του ο Χριστόφορος Κολόμβος.
Είναι καταγεγραμμένο ότι στις 22 Φεβρουαρίου 1630 ένας ινδιάνος ονόματι Κουαντακένα από τη φυλή των Γουαμπανοάγκ έμαθε την τέχνη του ποπ-κορν σε κάποιους βρετανούς αποίκους στο Πλίμουθ της Μασαχουσέτης. Όσοι από τους Ευρωπαίους το δοκίμασαν ενθουσιάστηκαν τόσο πολύ από τη γεύση του, που το έτρωγαν κάθε πρωί, συνοδεύοντάς το με κρέμα και ζάχαρη. Αργότερα έγινε απαραίτητο συνοδευτικό στο δείπνο της Ημέρας των Ευχαριστιών.
Το ποπ-κορν διαδόθηκε ακόμη περισσότερο τον 19ο αιώνα από τους υπαίθριους πωλητές στα πάρκα, στα πανηγύρια και τα καρναβάλια, όταν ο μέσος Αμερικανός άρχισε να έχει περισσότερο ελεύθερο χρόνο στη διάθεσή του.
Με την εξάπλωση της κινούμενης εικόνας, οι πλανόδιοι πωλητές έστησαν την πραμάτεια τους έξω από τους κινηματογράφους. Γρήγορα ήρθαν σε σύγκρουση με τους αιθουσάρχες, που δεν ήθελαν να αποσπάται η προσοχή των θεατών κατά τη διάρκεια της προβολής. Όταν, όμως, οι θεατές επέβαλαν τη θέλησή τους και συνόδευαν την προβολή της ταινίας με ποπ κορν, οι αιθουσάρχες αναγκάστηκαν να προσαρμοστούν στη νέα κατάσταση και πήραν στα χέρια τους τη διάθεση του προϊόντος, που τους απέφερε επιπλέον κέρδη.
Η γλυκιά συνήθεια άλλαξε κατά τη διάρκεια του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου και το ποπ κορν απόκτησε αλμυρή γεύση, όταν η ζάχαρη ήταν είδος εν ανεπαρκεία. Στις μέρες μας, το ποπ-κορν είναι ο απαραίτητος σύντροφος της ελαφράς διασκέδασης στους πολυκινηματογράφους όλου του κόσμου. Οι Αμερικανοί κρατούν και σήμερα τα σκήπτρα στην κατανάλωση ποπ-κορν, με 400.000 τόνους τον χρόνο ή 80 κιλά ανά Αμερικανό.
