Η κουζίνα των ανθρώπων των σπηλαίων στην Παλαιολιθική Εποχή στην Ευρώπη ήταν τελικά πιο πλούσια απ’ ό,τι πίστευαν μέχρι τώρα οι επιστήμονες. Υπολείμματα κόκκων αμύλου που βρέθηκαν πάνω σε πέτρες ηλικίας 30.000 που χρησιμοποιούνταν για άλεσμα, δείχνουν ότι οι προϊστορικοί άνθρωποι πιθανότατα έτρωγαν μια πρώιμη μορφή επίπεδου ψωμιού (μάλλον όχι ιδιαίτερα νόστιμου!), με το οποίο συνόδευαν το κρέας τους, αντίθετα με τη μέχρι τώρα κυρίαρχη άποψη, ότι οι κυνηγοί-συλλέκτες εκείνης της εποχής ήσαν πρωτίστως -αν όχι αποκλειστικά- κρεατοφάγοι.
Ο λόγος που μέχρι σήμερα είχε επικρατήσει μια κρεατο-κεντρική αντίληψη για τους προϊστορικούς ανθρώπους, είναι ότι η κρεατοφαγία αφήνει πολύ πιο εύκολα ανιχνεύσιμα ίχνη (π.χ. οστά ζώων που φέρουν χαράγματα από δαγκωματιές) σε σχέση με την κατανάλωση φυτών, πολύ περισσότερο που οι αρχαιολόγοι παλαιότερα έπλεναν τα λίθινα εργαλεία και έτσι άθελά τους εξαφάνιζαν τα όποια φυτικά υπολείμματα.
Η νέα ανακάλυψη από ερευνητές του Ιταλικού Ινστιτούτου Προϊστορίας και Πρώιμης Ιστορίας στη Φλωρεντία, υπό την Άννα Ρεβεντίν και την Λάουρα Λόνγκο, που δημοσιεύτηκε στο περιοδικό PNAS της Εθνικής Ακαδημίας Επιστημών των ΗΠΑ, σύμφωνα με το πρακτορείο Ρόιτερ και τα κορυφαία επιστημονικά περιοδικά "Science", "Nature" και "New Scientist", δείχνει ότι οι παλαιολιθικοί Ευρωπαίοι χρησιμοποιούσαν θρεπτικές ρίζες, κοτσάνια και φύλλα άγριων φυτών πλούσιων σε υδρογονάνθρακες (π.χ. από φτέρες ή το χόρτο βραχυπόδιο), παρόμοιες με την πατάτα, για να δημιουργούν μια μορφή αλευριού.
